Joint Project
History and Goal of the Joint Project
Carbon2Chem® stands for developing and providing technical solutions for implementing the transformation process in industry as part of the energy transition. Carbon2Chem® provides key technology modules for CO2 point sources such as the steel, cement, and lime industries, as well as for the thermal treatment of waste, on the way to achieving climate neutrality.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is produced not only in the provision of energy but also during the production process, particularly in the basic materials industry. This is where Carbon2Chem® comes in. It seeks solutions to capture the unavoidable CO2 and use it for the chemical industry according to the principle of Carbon Dioxide Capture and Utilisation (CCU). The modular structure for the capture and utilisation of process-related CO2 enables existing industrial sites to be linked to new structures, creating a new cross-industry production network that can eliminate the use of fossil fuels in the production of fuels, plastics, and basic chemicals.
In addition to technological development, the maintenance of competitiveness, jobs and dialogue with society are important elements in the successful implementation of the energy transition. The fulfilment and feasibility of these key points have been successfully demonstrated over the past eight years.
Carbon2Chem® has been funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) since 2016. The funding amounts to a total of around €150 million and is divided into two project phases of four years each.
